Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How do automatic mechanical pencils work?

Automatic mechanical pencils have a lead that is not connected to the outer casing, allowing it to move freely. When you click a button or push the top of the pencil, a spring mechanism pushes the lead forward a set amount, allowing you to easily achieve the desired lead length.

2. Why are mechanical pencils not allowed in exams?

Mechanical pencils are not allowed in some exams, such as the SAT and ACT, because the machines used to mark the score sheets cannot pick up the markings made by mechanical pencils. This means that even if your answers are correct, they may not be counted because the machines cannot detect them. The same restriction applies to pens.

3. Why are rotring pencils so expensive?

Rotring pencils are more expensive compared to basic office store models due to several factors. They are made with more engineering, metal, precision manufacturing, and quality control. The materials and craftsmanship involved in creating a higher-quality pencil contribute to its higher price point.

4. Is 0.7 or 0.5 lead better?

The choice between 0.7mm and 0.5mm lead depends on personal preference and writing style. For most people, 0.5mm lead is strong enough and works well. However, individuals who tend to write with more pressure or have a heavier hand may find that 0.7mm or even 0.9mm lead is better suited to their needs.

5. What are the cons of mechanical pencils?

One drawback of mechanical pencils is that the leads are more brittle and can break easily, especially the thinner diameter leads. Additionally, there is a possibility of experiencing a lead jam in the lead pipe, which requires using a clearing pin to free it.
