Making coffee is something that the vast majority of people enjoy doing. The pleasure of waking up in the morning, brewing coffee, and smelling it in the air is a true turn-on that can set the day in the right direction. It is no secret, therefore, that the online and physical retail market is filled with many different machines or appliances that promise high-quality coffee, brewed in a matter of minutes.

However, it can happen sometimes not to be near any source of electricity to make appliances function. It is hard to encounter an energy supplier while camping, hiking, or sailing. Furthermore, while not everybody is fond of adventures or nights spent in the woods around a fire, nobody can argue with the pleasure of an artisanal coffee.

This article will help you identify the process of making artisanal coffee without using tools that are created from machinery technology.

What you need

The equipment you need is nothing too sophisticated. All you need is a pot or a pan, some grounded coffee, a lot of water, and fire or something that can heat things. According to some of the best head chefs in the world, this set is all that it takes to brew some delicious coffee without the need for expensive appliances. Besides, these components can be easily found on boats or camps, so it is also possible to improvise when the coffee lust kicks in!

But what about if you only have coffee beans? Does it mean you cannot enjoy a cup of coffee?

Fortunately, there is something very “primitive” you can do when this type of situation occurs. All you need is a bowl to put the beans in. Then, you can use a stone and you can beat the beans until they crumble. If this sounds a bit too rough to you, then you can bring a pestle or a mortar to ease the process: you can rotate the tool for 5 seconds, and then put pressure on the beans from the above. This process also allows you to obtain finer or thicker consistency. Just make sure to cover the container you’re using to avoid wasting the precious grounds!

Here’s a video that can further help you understand how to grind coffee beans without a grinder.

A 4-step process

The process of making coffee without a coffee maker is not difficult at all. We could say it is even simpler than using a Moka brewer or a French press. This process is a small trick that can greatly improve the way you make coffee while at camp or while sailing with your mates (or even on your own!).

This process can be subdivided into 4 simple steps. We will now dig into it!

1. Fill the pan with water and heat things up

The first step is to fill the pot or the pan with water, simple as that. When doing this, keep in mind it is better to add a bit more water than usual, as some will likely evaporate.

Then, you have to heat the pot to brew coffee. This is the trickiest part when you are away from any electricity sources. In these cases, the good old fire lit with sticks or paper can do wonders, so it is better to be prepared and do some prior training with lighting a fire. Remember that the heat should be medium-high.

2. Add coffee

When the water is boiling, it is time to add the grounded coffee obtained from the beans. You should add two spoons of coffee every six ounces of water. With that said, you can vary the coffee quantity to serve as many people as there are (obviously, consider the pot capacity and the water quantity).

3. Wait for the coffee to brew

Make sure to stir the coffee now and then, and wait for the coffee to be ready. When this happens, turn off the heat, cover the pot, and be patient for four or five minutes as the coffee grounds need to settle at the bottom of the pot. Every single coffee ground should be deposited.

4. Serve and enjoy!

And that’s it! All you have to do is serve the coffee and enjoy it. A warm cup of coffee to be shared around the fire in the woods is something worth trying.

Bonus step: use a strainer to avoid grounds falling into the cup. Alternatively, you can just be cautious when pouring.
