What to Look for in Mini Computers

Although less popular than traditional laptops and desktops, Mini Computers are an alternative when we need a compact computer. But being small does not imply that it will be unpopular.

In the market, we find proposals of the most diverse that fit different needs. In this Mini Computers purchase guide, you will find the keys when choosing one and some of the most interesting models on the market.

What to look for when choosing a mini-computer? There are many factors to consider when buying a mini-computer. Some of them are:

Types and dimensions

Strictly speaking, in the market, we will find three types of minicomputers: small-sized desktop towers sticks similar to USB sticks. If we do not have especially scarce space requirements, there are also towers on horseback between the mini and the standard with more compact designs than usual.

The stick format is the most compact, simple (hardware level), and affordable, with dimensions and design reminiscent of a USB stick that we will connect to output peripherals such as a monitor or a television. They consume little energy, which they take from the peripheral to which we connect it.

Hardware

As when choosing any other computer, we will think about what we are going to use it for, so that we can evaluate which processor, storage, RAM, if we need a dedicated graphic or not and what ports interest us.

As for storage, we will find models with the fast but expensive SSD and the classic HDD with high storage space at low cost as usual. The latter consume less and are more affordable, but they are also considerably slower and limited in capacity. In this sense, we will find them in the cheapest and simplest minicomputers, those designed to use them from time to time in basic tasks: those of the stick type.

Regarding processors, in the range of minicomputers options, we will see the usual Intel and AMD x86 classics in traditional and portable desktops. But there are also options with ARM processors, much more modest at the level of performance but with lower consumption.

As for memory, minicomputers use the RAM modules found in laptops and usually have a maximum of 2 slots, so it is worth investing in an adequate amount from the beginning.

If we want powerful equipment and/or want to use it intensively, it is important to pay attention to cooling and temperature control, especially because of the limited space that air has to move between components. In addition, more ambitious hardware goes hand in hand with superior energy consumption.

The use of minicomputers

If the idea is to use it as a multimedia center, we are interested in a computer with enough storage to store our content (unless we opt for streaming), decent sound and graphics options and enough ports to transfer content from other devices.

We may not be clear about the use of the computer, in that case, it is better to choose a versatile device. Unless we are very limited in budget and/or not going to demand too much, better to opt for processors such as Core, 8GB of RAM as a starting point and SSD or HDD storage options.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is a mini computer used for?

Mini computers have been historically used for scientific and engineering computations, business transaction processing, file handling, and database management. They emerged in the late 1950s and reached their peak in the 1960s and '70s. While their popularity declined in the 1980s and '90s, mini computers still serve various purposes in different industries.

2. How much do mini PCs cost?

The cost of mini PCs varies widely. There are small project PCs available for under $50, while more compact desktop models can cost $1,000 or more. The price range depends on factors such as the specifications, performance, and brand of the mini PC.

3. How long do mini computers last?

The lifespan of a mini computer depends on various factors, but on average, it can last 2-3 years with regular usage. However, unlike traditional desktop computers, with a mini PC, it is possible to upgrade parts gradually instead of purchasing a completely new unit, extending its overall lifespan.

4. What are the disadvantages of a mini computer?

Some disadvantages of mini computers include limited onboard storage, the absence of a CD/DVD drive, small keyboards that may be challenging for fast typists, and the lack of a dedicated graphics card. However, these drawbacks can vary depending on the specific model and intended use of the mini computer.

5. Do mini PCs have WiFi?

Yes, most mini PCs come with built-in support for Wi-Fi. They typically support Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) wireless networking, as well as Bluetooth. This eliminates the need for additional dongles or adapters to connect to wireless networks or use wireless peripherals.

6. Is a mini PC as good as a normal PC?

While mini PCs are generally less powerful than full-sized desktop computers, they are still capable of handling standard computing tasks. This includes web browsing, video playback, office tasks like word processing and spreadsheet management, and even some more demanding tasks like web development. The suitability of a mini PC depends on the specific requirements and needs of the user.
