Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How many lumens is good for a lantern?

For lanterns, lumens start out around 40 and can run up to 700 for the brightest modes; most lanterns will offer something in the 150-350 lumen range. For just poking around camp at night 100 lumens is sufficient.

2. What is the brightest portable lantern?

What is the brightest camping lantern? The brightest camping lantern product that we could find was the Super Bright LED Rechargeable Portable Scene Light II by Streamlight. It has a maximum brightness of 10,000 lumens, which is the highest amount of lumens we've seen in a lantern so far.

3. Is 500 lumens bright for a lantern?

With a maximum light output of 500 lumens, this reliable lantern can illuminate about a 45 foot circumference on high mode. That amount of light is great for camping, backyard entertaining, emergency preparation, and DIY projects.

4. How many lumens do I need for an emergency lantern?

An LED lantern with 100 lumens will light most campground spaces, while between 250 and 550 lumens is an appropriate range for a power outage. While 250 lumens is more than enough to illuminate a room, a lantern with higher lumen output will likely be more useful if you need to move outside for any reason.
