I learned this the hard way when I dropped a handful of fertilizer in one spot, and that area grew about 3 times faster than the rest. However, if the lawn is lush enough, I can hold back on the fertilizer to make maintenance easier. In summer, the growth slows significantly, and it can die if temperatures exceed 105°F. Overall, if you live in the southwest, don't skimp on fertilizer, as the soil is often alkaline."
