Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What kind of cloth do you use to clean a flute?

To clean a flute, it is recommended to use a lint-free cloth or a silver polishing cloth. Carefully insert the cloth-covered rod into the instrument and swab with a back and forth motion to remove moisture. This helps to keep the flute clean and in good condition.

2. How big should a flute cleaning cloth be?

A flute cleaning cloth typically has a rod that is around 34.5cm (13.6 inches) long, while the cloth itself measures approximately 14.7x15cm (5.79x5.9 inches). This size is suitable for most flutes and makes it easy to clean the instrument effectively.

3. Can I use Lysol wipes on my flute?

It is generally not recommended to use Lysol wipes or any disinfectant wipes on a flute. Instead, you can use alcohol wipes on the flute's lip plate to kill germs if the flute is shared by multiple players. For cleaning the inside of the headjoint, it is best to use a soft, lint-free silk cloth inserted into the cleaning rod.

4. Can I use an alcohol wipe on my flute?

Using alcohol wipes or a cotton cloth sprayed with alcohol can be used to wipe the exterior of the flute. However, it is important to avoid using alcohol on certain areas such as the headjoint cork. Cotton swabs can be used to clean hard-to-reach areas inside the headjoint near the cork.

5. Can I use a paper towel to clean my flute?

It is not recommended to use a paper towel to clean a flute as it may leave behind lint or fibers. Instead, use a lint-free cloth or silk cloth for cleaning the flute. Paper towels can be used for cleaning the tenon receiver on the middle joint and foot joint, but be sure to wipe until no dirt or tarnish shows up on the towel.
