An annual plant (30-80 days). Stems are strong, with a height of 30'-40' (80-100 cm). Inflorescences-baskets are large, spherical, with a diameter of 2'-3' (4-6 cm), and a variety of bright colors. Grow by sowing seeds in open ground, or for earlier flowering through seedlings. Flowering begins in July and lasts until frost. Used in group plantings in the design of flower beds, and for cutting.

Fill a pot or seed tray with moist seed compost and lightly firm the surface. Gently push your dahlia seeds into the compost. Don't forget to label your seeds. Cover pots with an inflated clear polythene bag, held in place with a rubber band. If sown in seed trays, cover with a propagator lid.

Seedlings will germinate within a couple of weeks. Once the ‘true' leaves have grown, seedlings are ready to transplant into individual pots. Hold plants by their leaves and gently tease them out of the soil.

Gently transplant seedlings in 10 cm (4'') pots of multipurpose compost, firm, and water well. In mid-May, harden off plants by standing them outdoors during the day and bringing them in at night. Plant them in their final positions once all risk of frost has passed.

A staple for many gardens Asters come in numerous varieties and we consider these tender perennials for zones 3-8 and are not recommended for extreme heat or zones 9-13. It's best to start in pots early and then transplant after your last frost in the spring.

While they can be transplanted their roots prefer to not be disturbed when transplanted so it's best to use a compostable peat pot, or peat pellets, when starting early in pots and plant the whole pot instead of removing the seedling when transplanting. Sow your seeds on the surface and gently press your seed to make good contact with your pre-moistened potting mix.

Do not cover or let anything else (like plastic wrap) make contact with the seeds while they are germinating. Keep your seeds moist by watering from below (do not water from above) and expose your pots to light. Aster seeds will not germinate and grow in hot temperatures.

If you live in a very mild zone you can try direct seeding these in spring after your last frost. Sow on the surface of your garden bed and lightly dust with screened peat to disguise your seeds from the birds. If direct sowing we suggest you don't try and transplant your seedlings but thin to 12" spacing.

Zinnia are very unusual fully double 3" flowers that grow on tall 30" stems. Very vigorous in the garden and similar to the Zinderella zinnia's at 1/4 the price. Please Note: Around 10% of these will be single petaled flowers and will not form the crested head.

In spring loosen enriched garden soil down to a 6" depth. Zinnia can be started early in pots but for best results we highly recommend you direct seed them in late spring once the temperature warms up to a consistent low in the 70's during the day. They prefer some light exposure so we press them into the soil and cover them lightly with peat. You can also use sand.

Once the plant is 6" tall pinch down about a inch or so to encourage branching. Zinnia's are one of the few flowers that are not affected by high summer heat and we generally sow one set in late spring and one set in early summer to ensure blooms all summer long.

They are also very "hungry" so we recommend foliar feeding at least bi-weekly once the plant is mature, and amending the soil with compost or a mild garden fertilizer (10-10-10) once in the middle of their life cycle (generally when they reach their full height).
