Best Choices of DSLR Cameras for You

Resolution

The resolution of a camera is usually measured in megapixels (MP). This number indicates the number of pixels that the camera uses to produce an image. All cameras usually have enough MP, but many of them do not have sufficiently powerful processors to deal with images.

Lenses

There are two important characteristics in relation to the lenses: aperture and focal length. The focal length of the lens, measured in millimeters (mm), tells us what the magnification of the image is and the amount of scene covered by the lens (the viewing angle).

As the focal length increases, things look bigger and occupy more. A lens that covers multiple focal lengths is a zoom lens, and the zoom specification is the ratio of the longest to the shortest focal length: a 20-100mm lens, therefore, has a 5x zoom.

Sensor size and type

With the size of the sensor, we mean the dimensions of the array of photoreceptors that create the pixels that become an image.

Larger sensors generally produce better photo quality, but the larger the sensor, the larger the camera. A larger sensor also requires a larger, more electronic lens. Larger sensors are also more expensive and increase the price of a camera.

ISO sensitivity

The sensitivity of the camera to light is called ISO sensitivity. The higher the number, the better the camera will shoot in low light conditions. However, as the sensitivity increases so does the amount of noise.

As a result, few cameras are able to use the highest ISO sensitivity. Rating ranges, making a reliable specification. For example, a camera that has up to ISO 6400 will probably produce decent images up to ISO 800.

Image Stabilizer

Image stabilization prevents camera shake. There are two types of optical image stabilizers: Located in the chamber and Located in the lens. They work similarly, but those located on the lens seem to work a little better during video shooting, but those located on the camera are more comfortable when changing lenses with or without a stabilizer.

Cheaper cameras have an electronic stabilizer, which uses a combination of fast shutter speed and higher ISO sensitivities to help adjust the movement. Unfortunately, this increases image noise and is less effective in low lighting.

Battery

Most cameras use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. They offer a longer battery life than AA batteries but are generally designed for a camera brand. There are models that use AA batteries, but they are generally low-end compact and mega-zoom cameras.

When buying a camera you have to verify how many shots you hold without having to recharge the battery. On the other hand, it is very normal to use this type of rechargeable batteries in the flashes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Are DSLR cameras still worth buying?

Yes, DSLR cameras are still worth buying. Despite the rise of mirrorless cameras, DSLRs remain popular among photographers. They offer excellent resolution, dynamic range, high ISO performance, fast autofocus, and come in ergonomic and robust bodies. In fact, DSLR sales increased by 123% in 2022, indicating their continued relevance and demand in the market.

2. Why are DSLRs being discontinued?

DSLRs are being discontinued because mirrorless cameras are gaining popularity and introducing innovative features. The industry is shifting towards mirrorless models, which offer advancements in technology. However, if your DSLR still works, it is advisable to continue using it until you need a new camera to minimize electronic waste.

3. Why are DSLR cameras better?

DSLR cameras have several advantages. They provide better resolution, sharpness, and clarity due to their larger sensor and powerful processing power. DSLRs also offer the versatility of interchangeable lenses, allowing photographers to customize their gear for different shooting situations. These features make DSLRs a preferred choice for many photographers, especially when it comes to capturing portraits.

4. What is the downside to DSLR?

There are a few downsides to DSLRs. They tend to be more expensive compared to point-and-shoot cameras due to their high-quality components and features. DSLRs also require additional accessories, as they often come as a body-only package. Despite these drawbacks, DSLRs offer superior performance and capabilities for photographers who prioritize image quality and flexibility.

5. Which is better DSLR or mirrorless?

The choice between a DSLR and a mirrorless camera depends on individual needs and preferences. If you prioritize fast and reliable autofocus, an optical viewfinder, and don't mind the size, a DSLR may be the better option. On the other hand, if you prefer a lightweight camera body with an electronic viewfinder (EVF) and the ability to shoot in low-light situations, a mirrorless camera would be more suitable.

6. Do professionals use DSLR or mirrorless?

While the use of mirrorless cameras is increasing among professionals, DSLRs still have a significant presence. According to a survey, 63% of professional photographers use mirrorless cameras, while 36% use DSLR cameras. Only a small percentage (1%) use both types. This indicates that both DSLRs and mirrorless cameras have their place in the professional photography industry.
