Ready for the Course: How to Buy the Right Crib Mattress Pads
Introduction
When it comes to choosing a crib mattress pad, it's important to consider a few key factors in order to ensure that your little one gets a comfortable and safe night's sleep. In this article, we'll go over some of the most important things to consider when shopping for a crib mattress pad, as well as some of the top options on the market.
Factors to Consider
First and foremost, you'll want to make sure that the crib mattress pad you choose is the right size for your crib. A pad that is too small won't provide adequate protection for your baby, while one that is too big could pose a safety hazard. Be sure to measure your crib carefully before making a purchase.
Next, consider the materials that the crib mattress pad is made of. The best crib mattress pads are made of breathable, hypoallergenic materials that will keep your baby cool and comfortable throughout the night. Avoid pads made of synthetic materials or those with chemicals or flame retardants, as these can be harmful to your baby's health.
In addition to the materials, you'll want to look for a crib mattress pad with a waterproof layer. This will help to protect your baby's mattress from spills, leaks, and other accidents, and can save you from having to replace the entire mattress in the event of a mess.

2. What do you put under a crib mattress?
A crib mattress pad with stretchy skirts that wrap underneath the baby's crib mattress provides a snug and secure fit. These mattress pads are machine washable and dryer friendly for easy cleaning. It is advisable for parents to have 2-4 crib mattress pads to have extras on hand for late-night bedding changes.
3. How do I choose a crib mattress pad?
When choosing a crib mattress pad, look for one that is firm, has a waterproof layer, and fits snugly. It is important to prioritize safety and ensure that the mattress pad complements the crib mattress you have selected for your baby's nursery.
4. Is a bassinet mattress pad safe?
Adding a mattress topper to a bassinet is not safe for infants, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The AAP advises against using mattress toppers or anything that makes the sleep surface softer for babies younger than 1 year old.
5. What is the difference between a crib mattress pad and cover?
A crib mattress pad is designed to keep your baby comfortable while they sleep, while a mattress cover is used to protect the mattress from stains. Both are essential accessories for a crib, ensuring comfort and hygiene for your little one.
6. How often do you wash a crib mattress pad?
It is recommended to clean your baby's crib mattress pad at least once a month. Dirt, dust, skin, and hair can accumulate on the pad, and regular cleaning helps remove potential allergens and maintain a clean sleeping environment for your baby.
7. What are four things that should not be in a crib?
Pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, stuffed animals, and other soft products should not be placed in a crib, as they pose a suffocation risk for babies. If you hang a mobile over the crib, ensure it is securely attached to the side rails, wall, or ceiling.
8. How do you elevate a crib mattress for congestion?
To safely elevate your baby's head during sleep when they have congestion, you can place a firm pillow under the crib mattress. It is important to avoid placing pillows or any soft bedding directly in the crib, as they can pose a suffocation risk.
9. What not to put in a bassinet?
Avoid placing soft objects such as blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals in the bassinet, as they can increase the risk of suffocation. It is also important to maintain a comfortable room temperature and avoid overdressing the baby to prevent overheating, which can be dangerous for newborns.
10. How thick should a bassinet pad be?
A bassinet pad should not be excessively thick, with a maximum thickness of 1.5 inches. It is advisable to purchase a new bassinet or ensure that the product meets current safety standards established by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Checking for any recalls or warnings related to the product is also recommended.
